Choosing the right rotary drum dryer is the single most important step to a successful drying line. Here is a practical guide from Dongding's engineering team on the key factors to evaluate.
1. Initial and Final Moisture
Start with the moisture range of your material and the moisture you need to reach. High-moisture feeds such as sludge (around 80%) require larger drums and more heat than mineral powders at 15–20% moisture.
2. Material Behaviour
Sticky materials such as coal slime and sludge need self-cleaning feed systems and specially shaped lifting flights to prevent build-up. Free-flowing materials such as sand and ore powder are easier to handle but may require abrasion-resistant internals.
- Sticky feed → self-cleaning screw and dispersing system
- Abrasive material → wear-resistant drum lining
- Heat-sensitive material → lower air temperature and gentle handling
3. Capacity and Energy Source
Match drum diameter and length to your target capacity in tonnes per day. Consider the available heat source — coal, gas, biomass or electricity — and choose a furnace that balances fuel cost with emissions compliance.
4. Tailor-Made Design
Every material behaves differently, so insist on a supplier that tests your material first. Dongding offers free material testing and tailors drum size, flights, furnace and dust collection to your exact requirements.
